An Inspiring Act of Val(our)
We have some pretty inspiring people on the Century Group team who go above and beyond to serve their communities. But the thing about these unsung heroes is that they generally don’t sing their own praises, so their good work often goes unnoticed. Luckily, the Delta Police Department took the lead in recognizing Century Group’s own Val Periera for an incredible display of courage, and we couldn’t be prouder to share the story.
On Friday, 25 May 2012, a Delta Police Officer was investigating a possible impaired driver in Tsawwassen and pulled the suspect over to the side of the road. Val happened to be in the area and as he got out of his car, he noticed the officer was engaged in a heated verbal exchange with the suspect. Events escalated quickly when the suspect punched the officer, and a physical struggle ensued. Without hesitation, Val threw himself at the legs of the suspect knocking him to the ground, and continued to assist the police officer until a second officer arrived on scene and the suspect was in custody.
On Wednesday, 11 June 2014, the Delta Police Department honoured Val (and other public heroes) at a special ceremony where he was commended with a Chief Constable Commendation for his selflessness and courage for putting his own life at risk to help a police officer.
From all of us at Century Group, we want to recognize Val’s truly inspiring heroism, professionalism and dedication to his community. From organizing his annual Cut for Cancer event to raise money for cancer research, to lending a helping hand to Delta’s finest, Val is a true role model and we’re incredibly proud to have such an upstanding local citizen as part of our team.
