Ormidale Block: Setting a benchmark for innovative planning in Gastown
When Century Group’s development team decided to take on a project in Gastown, they wanted to be very specific in satisfying what tenants desired in that neighbourhood and what was not currently available.
While most developments in the neighbourhood are currently being rehabilitated, Ormidale Block will face a complete redevelopment. It will blend modern efficiencies with heritage character in order to provide spaces that meet the demand for the “smart” standards by businesses wishing to operate in Gastown.
According to Stephen Moscovich, Associate VP of Colliers International, “Gastown is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, and so it’s important to maintain its distinctiveness. However, we know that there is a large demand from a variety of high-tech businesses who like the character and heritage of Gastown, but who have forgone opportunity to set up here because the current buildings come with various limitations and inefficiencies.”
Ormidale Block will have modern features such as electric plug-in stations for vehicles and bikes, biometric recognition for access, an abundance of fresh air circulating through the building, healthy building attributes, and other innovative features not yet seen in Gastown.
In addition to being a highly energy efficient building, there will also be shared access to a 4,800 square foot green rooftop deck, indoor and outdoor bike racks, and showers.
Stabilizing of the building has recently been completed to secure the building’s heritage facade and exterior demolition has commenced.
